4 Winter Activities Your Dog Will Love

As we begin to enter the chilliest months of the year, it’s easy to want to wrap ourselves up in a blanket and hibernate inside. Thinking of fun outdoor activities to do with your pup in the winter can be challenging but certainly not impossible.

Here are four easy and creative ways to get you and your dog some exercise during the colder months.

1.Take a Winter Hike

There’s something so serene and peaceful about taking a hike through the forest with your furry friend. Dogs love to be let off the leash to explore new scents and views, and it is much more exciting for them than the everyday romp through the neighborhood. It is important to make sure your dog is prepared for the winter walk to be comfortable and safe. A hike through nature is a great way to relieve stress not only for you but for your best fur friend too.

2.Skijoring

Skijoring is a cross between cross-country skiing and dog sledding and is perfect if you receive a lot of snow during the winter months. All you do is put a harness on your dog, clip into your skis and glide across the snow as your dog runs up ahead. Skijoring is better suited for medium to large athletic dogs like Labrador Retrievers.

3.Scavenger Hunt

If you can’t make it out to the dog park, your backyard can suffice as a mini scavenger hunting ground for your pup. Have you and your family hide dog toys, tennis balls, treats, etc., in your backyard and test your dogs tracking skills. Tracking is a great way to keep your dog’s sense of smell strong and improve their problem-solving skills. Your dog will stay mentally stimulated and get a lot of exercise running around. It’s a fun and creative activity your whole family can enjoy.

4.Shed Hunting

Shed hunting has become a very popular off-season sport with hunting dogs. Every year bucks shed their antlers between January and March, depending on the region. These naturally shed antlers just lay in the woods once they fall off. Rather than leaving them to decay in the forest, retrieving them can help deer/elk hunters keep track of the bucks or bulls that made it through the season. Hunting with your pup has a lot of advantages, and it is a great way to get them out of the house, get them moving and practice training commands.

It’s easy to get lazy during the winter and be less active, but if you have a furry friend who is counting on you to give them the much-needed exercise and fun they deserve, there is no time to slack off.

At Lankas Labs, we breed exceptionally athletic Labradors who can withstand cold temperatures so you can spend your winters skijoring and hiking through the newly fallen snow. Staying active during the winter months is a great way for you and your dog to stay in shape together and strengthen your bond.
