Signs Your Dog May be Sick

The last thing any pet owner wants to find out is that their beloved animal is sick, but it is an unfortunate reality that many of us will have to face at some point. Fortunately, most illnesses that afflict dogs can be remedied if they are caught early on, which is why we’re here to point out some of the most common signs that may indicate a dog is sick. While the following is not a comprehensive guide, these symptoms most likely signify that you should schedule a visit to the vet.

One of the most obvious signs that something is wrong with your dog is that they have bad breath or are drooling constantly. While many dogs may not naturally have breath that you want to smell constantly, you should at least be familiar with what your dog’s breath smells like. If there are any sudden changes to your dog’s breath, you will be able to more easily recognize that there may be a problem.

Another common sign that your dog is sick is increased drinking and urination. If your dog is drinking more than usual, this may signify that they are becoming dehydrated. This may also be accompanied by a change in appetite, which in turn can lead to either weight loss or weight gain. Feed your dog a consistent amount of food each day and you will be able to quickly tell if they aren’t eating their usual amount of food.

Other common symptoms in dogs include red eyes, itchy skin, coughing, a change in sleeping habits, and difficulty walking. If you notice any of these symptoms or any other unusual signs in your dog, seek professional care as soon as possible.
