Over the River and Through the Woods

Planning to take your dog on the road with you this holiday season? Here are a few quick tidbits of advice from TopDogTips.com to make sure that your travels are as smooth as the holiday egg nog!

Updated ID

Before hitting the highway, make sure your pup has updated ID tags in case you two get separated. Many things can happen in the travel frenzy between airport shuffles, train station boarding and unboarding or a runaway dog at the gas station – not to mention all the other frantic holiday-goers. Make sure your pup’s tags are current so you can be reached if your furry friend gets lost.

Travel With DogsDoctor’s Notes

You should also obtain a copy of your dog’s health records from your vet before you leave for the holiday. Some states may require proof of vaccinations or other medical records if you get stopped, so make sure to have them on hand. They also will be valuable just in case you need to take your pet to the doctor for an emergency visit while you are away from home.

Motion Sickness

To prevent your dog from getting sick in your vehicle or in his crate, don’t feed him or her within six hours of leaving, and stop providing water when you have less than two hours before hitting the road.  Make sure to have plenty of water available in the case of long trips, though, so that your friend can quench their thirst a bit during stops.

Buckle Up

Secure your dog in a crate or other seat to make sure your pet isn’t roaming free as you drive. You should never leave your pet unattended, especially at a train station or airport or even in the car. In addition, check the requirements for your chosen mode of transportation to make sure you do not break any laws and that your furry friend can accompany you on your trip.

From our family to yours, have a happy holidays!
